Officers Register

The Roll Book is an essential record of the dates of initiation, passing and raising, and whether a Brother has been Worshipful Master, as secretaries are able to refer to this information going back 60 or 70 years. The Minute Book gives an account of what occurred during a meeting, such as proposals, amendments to laws, festive board arrangements, details of Degrees, correspondence etc. Completed Minute Books, Registers, etc., which contain the history of the Lodge are valuable items and should be carefully stored and preserved for posterity.

Half Yearly Return

Originally returns from a Lodge were made to Grand Lodge half yearly; this is now done on an annual basis. In the month of October the Lodge elects its officers for the ensuing year and the return is forwarded to Grand Lodge in Dublin for their approval. Failure to make this annual return can result in a fine or suspension of the Warrant.

Lodge 80 Window

There are five circular stained glass windows on the front of Rathfriland Masonic Hall, one of which is shown left. The decorative design includes a Masonic symbol more commonly known as a square and a set of compasses. Together they are the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasony.

Bye Laws of Lodge 80

Every Masonic Lodge is strictly regulated by the Laws and Constitutions of The Grand Lodge of Ireland. In addition to these rules a subordinate Lodge has their own Bye-Laws which have to be conformed to by Lodge members. Shown left is a copy of the front cover of Lodge 80’s Bye-Laws.

Past Masters Jewel

To be elected the Master of a Lodge is the highest honour the Lodge has in its power to confer on any of its members. When the Master’s period of office is completed he is presented with a Past Masters’ Jewel by the members of the Lodge, as a mark of esteem of his dedication and service to the Lodge over the past year.

Church Service

These two historic leaflets of Church Services held at the turn of the last century. They were inserted in the Lodge Minute Book used from 1891, the year the Masonic Hall in John Street was opened.

Presentation of Chair

Pictured left to right are the Worshipful Master Aaron Clydesdale and Worshipful Bros. Dowie, McMenemy and Gamble who presented a new chair for the Senior Warden. Also included is Right Worship Bro. Rev. Charles McCurdy who dedicated the chair at the Installation ceremony in January 2010. Seated is Bro. John Hillis the Senior Warden for 2010.

There is no record of when the warrant was first issued in the Grand Lodge Register, but records suggest it was probably issued either in December.... Read More
